Russia2018: Arsenal keen to sign new deal with Iwobi

DECEMBER 19, 2017 – Arsenal is fast in talks with Alex Iwobi about a new contract despite him only signing a deal last year.

The Gunners are wanting to agree on a new deal with the Nigerian international before he jets off to the World Cup next summer.

The 21-year-old will have another 3 years left on his current deal at the end of the campaign. However, the club’s top brass are keen to reward the attacker for forcing his way into Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans this season with a bumper new contract.

Talks have begun between the club and player’s representatives, however, there’s still some way to go before a new long-term deal is agreed. Iwobi signed a five-year deal worth £30,000-a-week in October 2016, however, any fresh terms have to reflect his progress made within the last twelve months.

The Emirates academy product wants financial parity with other players of similar status at the club and the numbers mooted so far have not been high enough. The youngster made his debut in 2015 and made 21 appearances scoring two goals and by the end of the season made his full international debut for Nigeria. Iwobi has made 15 appearances for Arsenal this term and bagged a double in the Super Eagles outstanding win against Argentina in Russia last month.

If new terms are not agreed before the end of the season, a successful World Cup campaign could strengthen his bargaining position over the North London side next year.
