ABUJA, NOVEMBER 29, 2016 – From December 1 2016, data subscribers on the GSM network will start paying higher rates on internet subscription. Reports has it that the plans was orchestrated by CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele in order to generate more revenue from Nigerians. It is also viewed in some quarters as a subtle sanction on social media users as it have in recent times become a torn on the flesh of Buhari lead federal government.

A petition is already in place on change.org against the federal government to halt the increase by NCC. The petition reads:

NCC has instructed telecommunications companies within the country Nigeria to make certain changes is thier data structure which might lead to possibly increased rates for less data. Which is supposed to be implemented by December 1st 2016. We want the price of data to remain the same and individual companies to sell data at the price at which they choose to.
This petition will be delivered to:

Nigeria Communication Commission
Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC)
MTN Nigeria
MTN Nigeria
Globacomm nigeria
Glo Nigeria

If and when the cost of internet subscription is increased from December 1st, it will be a major set back to the budding ICT industry in Nigeria as well as destroying the social media life of most Nigerians.

During the 2015 presidential election campaign, one major issue raised against Buhri’s eventual presidency is taking Nigerians back to the stone age, if this happens we might well be saying hello to the dark ages in Nigeria once again.
